B.S.I.F. OIL AND CHEMICAL SPILL RESPONSE TRAINING PROGRAMME
Introductions
in the classroom
Session 1
in the classroom – approximately 60 minutes
The first session begins with a site awareness dvd followed by an overhead or power point presentation, focussing on hydrocarbons/chemicals and relevant Health & Safety issues and including:
- Laws and Regulations
- The Consequences of Causing Pollution
- Pre-planning
- Dealing with a Spill
- Absorbents
- Disposal & Duty of Care
Short Break
Session 2
outside – approximately 60 minutes
This session is a ‘hands on’ interactive and practical demonstration of all relevant products; the physical make up and attributes of the absorbents and the most effective way of applying them.
Session 3
outside – approximately 15 – 45 minutes
The delegates are split up into teams and are briefed. Team ‘A’ is supplied with a spill kit and a basic PPE pack. A spill is simulated and team ‘A’ deals with the incident using the materials provided. This process is repeated as many times as is deemed necessary with other team(s) who are also encouraged to comment on their own performance and that of their colleagues.
Debrief
either outside or in the classroom – approximately 5 minutes
NOTES:
- The trainer(s) will normally arrive on site 45 – 60 minutes before the course starts, to set up in the classroom and demonstration/exercise area(s).
- If they are available, use of a video player, television, overhead projector and/or screen may be requested.
- Outside, for the demonstration and exercise(s), an area of at least the size of three car park spaces is required, with access to water and preferably close to a drain. (No pollutants are used).
- Tea and coffee may be served before the start of the course or after Session 1.
- Upon receipt of a list of names of the delegates, a certificate will be produced for each one completing the course.
